In 2024, the U.S. healthcare system will welcome over 9,000 International Medical Graduates (IMGs) into first-year residency positions across various accredited Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs. This marks an increase of 657 IMGs (7.8%) from the previous year, showcasing a significant growth and the integral role IMGs play in the U.S. healthcare landscape.

Diverse Contributions of IMGs

This year, IMGs make up more than a quarter (25.1%) of all applicants who successfully matched into residency programs. Out of these, 3,181 are U.S. citizens, showing a slight decrease from last year, while the number of non-U.S. citizen IMGs matched has risen to 5,864, an increase of 832 from 2023. This diverse group of medical graduates remains a crucial component of the U.S. healthcare system, bringing a wealth of knowledge and skills from around the globe.
